Performance (24 hours, split in 5 parts) Graduation Show, Department of Fine Arts, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, NL
A grey zone of improvisation, locality and self-consciousness in a setting that includes props, pre-scripted gestures or choreography. A self induced dissociation exploring gaze and positioning self-reflection under demanding psychosomatic conditions.
Conveying a poetic image of an individual's inner life, and desire as a bond we share.
To activate the piece I worked with performer H. Monola (BA Gerrit Rietveld Academie) who during the set times of the endurance piece was not allowed to exit the small modified space. She could interact with spectators at will but she mainly chose to go through her internal landscapes alone, navigating through props that seemed to lend their logic from apparitions of a broken phantasy. A constant stream of music (taken from various sources) & sporadic instances of a voice-over (F. Simons) were underpinning the piece. The psychopathological nature of the installation was mirrored by a real insect, a praying mantis in its aquarium, with a live-feed camera set on it, broadcasting its image to a flat TV screen. The performative stage was set in between partition walls. Inside it, the performer was engaging in semi-improvised actions, that I coined as "simulation rituals”. The space of the performer was mirroring subjectivity, & it was falling in where domestics & incarceration met, i.e. a post-traumatic space.
