Performance-lecture and video (15m) MACBA, Barcelona, ES
sass<.pigeons is a performance lecture that took place in MACBA, Spain during my 1st year of study in the Dutch Art Institute. The form of the presentation is as such: two invited recipients watch a student’s performance lecture and then critique it. I took French thinker Maurice Blanchot and his notion of the récit as my starting point and I appropriated video material from youtube and text mostly from critical theory. By doing so I unfolded a playful logic of self-reflection and created a zone where narration of the event and event had to overlap, as a récit demands. I projected a video of 15 minutes and I mirrored the whole setup that would take place after my presentation by using two performers to act as an overblown version of the actual recipients. The performers lip-synced the voice-over coming from my video while I was standing close to them silently. At the end of the video, and in an ecstatic cinematic manner, I started passing along toy capsules with small pieces of paper containing the entirety of my script, a little bit before the normal recipients came to the stage in order to start commenting on my piece.
My presentation took as a starting point French thinker Maurice Blanchot to unfold a playful logic of self-reflection, and create a zone where narration of the event and event would overlap. The form of the presentation included two recipients that would watch my performance lecture and then critique it. However, I had asked my two performers to immitate the process that would follow so they were there in stage acting out to be the normal receipients. I did show them a video of 15 minutes, a mashup of youtube videos and orginal material that I edited in such a way in order to convey a new message. The performers improvised and lip-synced the voice-over coming from my video as if giving my their critique, while I was nodding accordingly.
After the video, I passed along toy capsules with small pieces of paper containing the entirety of my script scattered in phrases, before the normal recipients came to the stage to comment on my piece.
